4 Steps to Better Credit

1. Pay your bills on time. Creditors look closely at your credit history. If you pay your bills on time, this reflects well on you.

2. Manage your debt. Your debt/credit ratio, the percentage of your available credit that is being utilized, is another measure of your financial health. This counts for as much as 30% of your credit score!!

The best option is to keep your credit utilization under 30% of your available credit. Over 50% is already a problem .

So if you have a $5,000 limit -- and you want to buy a $4,000 furniture set -- split the purchase onto two cards, as creditors don't like to see a card almost maxed out; they look at you as a risk, someone who is using too much credit and has trouble paying off debt.

3. Check your credit report on a regular basis. The only way to protect your name and credit is to be proactive. With the rise of identity theft cases, it is important to review your credit files, and to report any inaccuracies to the major credit reporting agencies.

4. Don't close those old credit lines. The age of your accounts also impact your score, so as long as it's still on your credit report its giving you age!

Here's a little article that I wrote, hope you enjoy!

The Business Card

The business credit card is one of the most useful implements in the credit card tool shed.

The first thing to understand is, that you don't actually have to have a business to have a business credit card. You can apply for a card with your regular Social Security number and fill in sole proprietor when asked for type of business.
For example: If you sell stuff on EBay, you are a business. If you tutor, give piano lessons, have a playgroup, are an independent contractor, babysit etc. you have a business.
What are the advantages of a business card?

Generally speaking credit issuers are willing to go much further to attract the business consumer. With such things like low APR's, introductory 0% balance transfer offers, and generally better service with separate departments just to handle the business costumers..

In addition, for one who is trying to maximize his bonus points, air miles and such, business cards can be extremely lucrative.
However, to my mind, the main advantage to the business card is your credit score and the fact that your credit/debt ratio is not affected by debt on your business card.
This means that although carrying a large balance on a personal card can really hurt your score, on a business card it will not work against you.

I personally transfered balances from consumer to business cards and watched my score go up 45 points in one shot!!

International Transactions

As discussed, you're heading overseas and you want to know how foreign currency transactions work...
There are three options
1. Cash
2. Traveler checks
3. Credit cards
we will discuss options 1 and 3
With regards to cash, you can exchange US Dollars (USD) for the currency of your choice at many banks here or in the country of destination. The banks will exchange the currencies for you.
However they will do the exchange, several points off the exchange rate, meaning that you won't get full value for your money, and besides carrying around a whole lot of cash is never a good idea.
Which leads us to the credit card option:
When you initiate a foreign transaction on your credit card, the credit card companies pay the merchant in the local currency and they charge you in your home currency. They use the exact exchange rate.
Now, Visa and Mastercard charges 1% of the transaction, in order to cover any loss. For some reason most credit card issuers tack on an extra 2% for a total of 3% .
However there are two options 1. CapitalOne . CapitalOne exchanges at the rate and they also swallow the Visa/MC 1% fee! That is probably the best option, unless you have the .....
Amex Starwood Card. American Express charges a 2% flat fee on all foreign transactions ( 1% less then most issuers) . Now if your rewards are worth more than 2% you're in the clear!
Starwood points are worth 3 - 3.5 cents a point so you made back your 2% fee plus 1-1.5% back!!
However if you can get the CapitalOne card which gives 1.25% back on all purchases, that would be the true winner.

For the comparison we will start with Amex, Citi, Chase and Capital One.
In terms of costumer service I personally have found Amex to be the best with Chase a close second. But more importantly when you buy yur kid a new shirt which ends up shrinking after the first wash, What do you do??
